Getting Started

Bedside Radio turns your iPhone into a beautifully simple alarm clock radio. To get going, you only need to do two things: choose something to listen to, and set an alarm.

Set up a channel button

Each channel button is a shortcut to a station, playlist, or sound.

Tap any of the channel buttons on the main screen and you'll be able to browse over 35,000 radio stations from around the world, pick from your playlists and sounds, or add a streaming URL. Tap your choice to assign it.

Tap the back button to return to the main screen.

Set an alarm

Tap the alarm button to see your list of alarms. An alarm wakes you with the radio at a time and on days you choose.

Tap the + button to create your first alarm.

Choose a time and pick the days on which it should repeat. That's it! You have a working clock radio.

For the best experience, leave the app visible on your charging stand while you sleep. The display dims automatically to keep your bedroom dark, and your alarms will work reliably.

Alarms

Tap the alarm button to see your list of alarms.

Each alarm plays one of your channels. Wake to a morning show on weekdays, a playlist on weekends, or a gentle built-in sound โ€” whatever suits your routine. You can set as many alarms as you need.

Repeat patterns

Alarms can repeat in five ways:

  • Once โ€” fires once, then turns itself off.
  • Every day โ€” fires at the same time each day.
  • Selected weekdays โ€” specific days of the week, such as weekends only.
  • Repeating cycle โ€” a rotating pattern like 2 day shifts, 2 night shifts, 4 days off.
  • Selected dates โ€” fires on specific calendar dates.

Gentle wake

When enabled, the volume starts low and gradually increases over about 45 seconds, so you wake smoothly rather than with a jolt. You can turn this on in Settings.

Snooze

Snooze is available as an option in Settings. When enabled, a snooze button appears while the alarm is sounding. The default snooze is 9 minutes, up to 3 times. You can change this in Settings.

Skip next alarm

If you're already awake or want to sleep in, tap Skip on the alarm list. This skips the next occurrence without changing your schedule. You can undo it if you change your mind. The skip button appears when an alarm is due within 12 hours.

Backup alarms

Bedside Radio is designed to wake you up reliably. Two backup mechanisms are built in:

  1. Notification backup โ€” The app works best when visible while you sleep, but if it isn't, a time-sensitive notification plays a wake-up sound. For this to work, please allow notifications and set the banner style to Persistent in your device settings.
  2. Failsafe alarm โ€” If the radio can't start within 60 seconds โ€” for example, if your internet drops โ€” a built-in alarm sound plays continuously until you stop it.

Alarm duration

Alarms play for up to 1 hour by default, then stop automatically. You can change this in Settings.

Sleep and Nap Timers

Sleep timer

Tap the sleep button to start a 30-minute timer. The radio plays and the volume drops to a comfortable level (70% by default). Tap again to add more time, or long-press to cancel. The radio turns off when the timer ends.

The time left to play is shown above the clock time. You can change the time added for each tap, and the volume drop, in Settings.

Nap timer

Tap the nap button to start a 20-minute countdown. When it ends, your selected channel plays to wake you โ€” with gentle wake if you've enabled it in Settings. Tap again to add more time, or long-press to cancel.

The time remaining is shown above the clock time. You can change the time added for each tap in Settings.

Display and Dimming

A dark bedroom matters. Bedside Radio dims the display so the time is still visible without lighting up the room.

The display dims automatically after 5 minutes without a touch. If you'd rather dim it right away, long-press the clock.

Adjust the dimming level and idle time in Settings. The display can dim to as low as 1%, or up to 20%, of your screen's normal brightness.

Dawn to dusk

Turn this on and the display adjusts its brightness based on actual sunrise and sunset at your location. It dims deeply at night and brightens naturally during the day. This requires location permission.

Custom colors

Choose from 36 display colors across red, green, and blue tones. The default is a soft cyan. You'll find color options in Settings.

Channels

You have up to 50 channels, each a shortcut to a station, playlist, or sound. The main screen shows buttons 1 to 4, or 1 to 9 if this is enabled in Settings.

If a channel is not yet set, its button will be dimmed โ€” tap it to choose its audio source.

If a channel is already set, tap it to switch to that channel, or long-press it to make adjustments. Each channel remembers what you've assigned to it.

Tap the ellipsis button to access all 50 channels.

Audio sources

There are four types of audio source:

  • Radio stations โ€” Browse over 35,000 stations worldwide. Search by name, browse by country or genre, or tap Surprise Me for something random. You can mark favorite stations, countries, and genres to find them quickly.
  • Playlists โ€” Use playlists from your Music library, or create custom playlists within the app that mix library songs with imported sounds.
  • Songs and sounds โ€” Choose individual tracks from your Music library, use the built-in sounds (like Dreamscape, Morning Joy, or Sleepy), or import your own MP3 or M4A files.
  • Streaming URLs โ€” Add a direct URL to any internet radio stream.

Favorites

With thousands of stations across many countries and genres, favorites help you find what youโ€™re looking for quickly. Tap the star next to a country or genre to mark it as a favorite. Tap the star at the top right to show only favorites โ€” it turns gold when active.

You can also mark channels as favorites, which helps when youโ€™re using many of the 50 available slots. Turn on the Favorite toggle when viewing a channel, then use the filter button at the top right of the channel list to show only favorite channels.

Settings

Tap the settings button on the main screen to open Settings. Many of the features mentioned in this guide โ€” including snooze, gentle wake, dimming, timer durations, and display colors โ€” can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

Tips and Tricks

  • Long-press a channel button to jump straight to its settings.
  • Long-press the sleep or nap button to cancel the timer.
  • Long-press the clock to dim the display immediately.
  • Tap the channel name below the clock to adjust the volume.
  • Tap a playlist channel button while it's playing to skip to the next song.
  • Keep the app visible while you sleep for the full alarm experience. If the app isn't visible, you'll hear the notification backup instead.
  • Charge your phone overnight โ€” the app is designed to stay on your charging stand while you sleep.

Troubleshooting

Radio won't play

  • Check your internet connection. Radio stations stream over the internet.
  • Try a different station. Some stations go offline or change their stream URL.
  • Check the volume โ€” tap the channel name on the main screen to see the volume slider.
  • If you're using a streaming URL, double-check that the URL is correct and accessible.

Alarm didn't sound

  • Make sure the alarm toggle is on (green).
  • Leave the app visible on screen while you sleep.

Failsafe alarm played instead of my station

  • This means the app couldn't play your channel in time โ€” usually because of an internet issue or because a song or playlist is no longer available in your Music library.
  • Try playing the channel to make sure it still works.

Display too bright

  • Long-press the clock to dim immediately.
  • Adjust the dimming level in Settings (default is 7%, and it can go as low as 1%, or up to 20%).
  • Check that auto-dim is set to a comfortable idle time.
  • Try the dawn-to-dusk feature for automatic brightness that follows the sun.
